You will gain knowledge and practical tools to teach writing using high quality mentor texts. Through engaging lessons and daily opportunities to apply new understandings, your students will enjoy communicating through writing with purpose, enthusiasm, and confidence.

Topics Include:

  • Management of the writers’ workshop
  • Establishing independent writing
  • Writing to support content area learning
  • Elements of effective writing minilessons to teach for genre, craft, conventions, and the writing process
  • Using mentor texts with students to support active, constructive learning
  • Modeled, shared, and guided writing
  • Utilizing a writer’s notebook
  • Assessing and planning for instruction
  • Teaching responsively
  • Using online resources to plan, teach, and assess

Please have your own copy of The Writing Minilessons Book for a grade level (Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, or Grade 6), and your own writer’s notebook (blank notebook or Fountas & Pinnell’s Writer’s Notebook). Please visit the Requirements & Policies tab for details about this required text.
