Children in PreK come to school with many different experiences with language, sounds, and print. This two-day workshop will bring to life what very young learners need to know and understand about letters, sounds, and words and how you can support their learning by building on what they already understand.

Using the text, Literacy Beginnings, 3rd Edition: A PreK Handbook, you will explore the role and value of phonological awareness and phonics in the PreK classroom and the ways of teaching that will build a strong foundation for early literacy development.

Topics will include:

  • Language learning as the foundation for understanding letters, sounds, and words
  • Harnessing children’s natural curiosity to launch the learning of letters, sounds, and words
  • Teaching structures that support phonological awareness and phonics learning
  • Supporting Multilingual Learners in the classroom
  • Connecting phonological awareness and phonics learning to children’s daily lives
  • Authentic and systematic assessment of phonemic awareness and phonics learning

Gen worked as a literacy specialist and teacher in public schools for many years before joining the Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative as a Literacy Trainer. She has experience as a Reading Recovery teacher, classroom teacher, interventionist, and literacy coach. Over the years, she has worked with many students, educators, and administrators in the area of literacy acquisition and learning.

Cancellation Deadline & Refund Policies

You have until one week before the first day of this offering to cancel your registration. The cancellation deadline is February 4, 2025. There is a $50 cancellation fee. If you request a cancellation after the deadline, you will not be issued a refund. Substitution requests are acceptable. Please email CRRLC@lesley.edu if you have a cancellation or substitution request.

Requirements for Participation

After the training, you will receive a certificate of attendance for your participation. To receive a complete certificate, participation during the specified times is required. Additional work may be assigned to meet the clock hours.
